ST. BERNARD PARISH, LA – The St. Bernard Economic Development Foundation (SBEDF) congratulates Associated Terminals on the commissioning and christening of two new all-electric Liebherr CBG 500 E cranes, the D. Lopez and the Bill S., a major investment that strengthens cargo-handling capacity along the Lower Mississippi River and reinforces St. Bernard Parish’s role as a critical hub for global trade.
The cranes were officially christened during a ceremony held January 22 at Woldenberg Park in New Orleans, bringing together industry leaders and maritime stakeholders to mark a defining investment in the future of river-based commerce.
Mounted on newly designed, hybrid-capable crane barges, the all-electric cranes represent a significant advancement in efficiency, environmental performance, and long-term reliability for inland river operations. Designed to support high-capacity bulk cargo handling under demanding conditions, the new equipment underscores Associated Terminals’ commitment to innovation, safety, and sustained investment in river infrastructure that supports regional economic growth.
“The christening of the D. Lopez and the Bill S. represents far more than the addition of new equipment,” said Todd Fuller, President of Associated Terminals. “It reflects how we lead this company, by investing deliberately, planning for the long term, and setting a high standard for how cargo moves on the river. These cranes strengthen our capabilities today while reinforcing our responsibility to operate safely, efficiently, and with purpose for decades to come.”
Associated Terminals’ new all-electric Liebherr CBG 500 E cranes are engineered for high-volume, continuous service, featuring advanced hybrid power systems, intelligent load management, and energy recovery technology that reduces fuel consumption and emissions while maximizing operational performance. The crane barges, constructed by LAD Services and assembled at Boh Bros., are purpose-built for longevity and efficiency on the Mississippi River, a corridor central to St. Bernard Parish’s industrial base. The remote-operated capabilities of the new cranes also expand workforce opportunities, allowing Associated Terminals to diversify its talent pipeline by creating roles that are accessible to individuals who have historically faced barriers to entering cargo-handling and maritime operations, including women and people with physical disabilities.
In keeping with Associated Terminals’ long-standing tradition of honoring the people behind its success, the cranes were named after two company leaders whose careers reflect dedication to the maritime industry and the workforce that sustains it. The Bill S. honors Bill Sullivan, Vice President of Sales, who joined Associated Terminals in 2001 and has played a key role in supporting the company’s growth and customer relationships across the Lower Mississippi River. The D. Lopez is named for Dawn Lopez, Vice President of Marketing and Public Relations for Associated Terminals and Turn Services.
SBEDF extends special congratulations to Dawn Lopez, who also serves as Vice Chair of the Foundation’s Board of Directors. A Louisiana native with deep ties to the river and the region, Lopez has been a strong advocate for the maritime workforce and for telling the stories of the people and industries that drive Southeast Louisiana’s economy. Her leadership reflects the close alignment between private-sector investment and community-focused economic development.
“We congratulate Associated Terminals on this important investment and are especially proud to see one of our board members recognized in such a meaningful way,” said Meaghan McCormack, CEO of the St. Bernard Economic Development Foundation. “Dawn Lopez’s leadership exemplifies how industry experience and community commitment go hand in hand.”
As the D. Lopez and the Bill S. officially enter service, they represent more than new equipment. They signal continued confidence in the Lower Mississippi River, its workforce, and communities like St. Bernard Parish that depend on a strong, modern maritime economy.
